The traffic regulation of the roundabout Bremervörder Straße / Schiffertorsstraße has been widely discussed recently. For clarification, the traffic regulation is explained in detail below:
Overall view of the traffic roundabout. |
| 1. Cyclists | |
Cyclists travelling in the same direction as the roundabout traffic (driving on the right according to section 2 paragraph 1 of the German Road Traffic Regulations; see green arrows in the graphic), have priority over motorized traffic. Priority of cyclists has to be observed by vehicles entering the roundabout according to traffic sign 205 – “GIVE WAY” – as well as by those leaving the roundabout, according to section 9 paragraph 3 of the German Road Traffic Regulations (turning). Cyclists travelling clockwise break the road traffic regulations and must always give way.
| 2. Pedestrians | |
Due to the pedestrian crossings (zebra crossings), pedestrians have right of way in both directions when crossing.
| 3. Filter in following bypass | |
When using the bypass lane (direction must be indicated because there is a change of lane), motorized traffic has to give way to cyclists provided that they are riding in the same direction as roundabout traffic. This rule also applies to pedestrians walking in both directions. The filter lane ends after a distance of about 150 m. According to section 7 paragraph 4 of the German Road Traffic Regulations the so-called alternate filtering-in system has to be applied, which means that there is no priority of the “main lane”. Traffic filtering in has to be given the option to change lanes according to the courtesy of the road principle. Lanes can only be changed if there is no danger at all for any other road user.
