It is now a well-known fact that the new BMW plant will be built in Leipzig. Stade was one of the contenders. The town on the Elbe made it to the round in which the 12 best locations in Europe were included.
The advantages in favour of Stade as a location for industrial companies were clearly indicated in the application process:
Stade has been a successful industrial town for 30 years with well-known companies operating worldwide such as DOW Chemical, Airbus, E.ON Energie, Hydro Aluminium and AOS.
Stade's location in one of Europe's most dynamically developing metropolis regions, Hamburg, with its diverse economic, scientific and cultural opportunites makes Stade attractive for international companies.
The metropolitan region, with over 4 million inhabitants and a radius of 75 kilometers, offers a large job market potential with a great number of skilled workers.
Numerous education and training institutions, especially in technical fields, ensure the high qualifications of the employees.
The Elbe, which is navigable for ships, and the nearby ports provide excellent access to worldwide export markets.
The region has a high living standard, but the prices of property are comparatively low.
Industry in the region has maintained an over thirty year-old beneficial cooperation with public institutions, and it is accepted by the poplation.
In addition to the general advantages Stade provides, certain special features of the premises captured the interest of BMW.
Only a few German cities could offer the large connected premises which BMW requested.
The premises is very flat and free of residual waste.
The foundation soil is furthermore suitable for industrial use.
It is sufficiently far away from the next residential area.
There is a good freight connection to Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven for autombile loading and to Maschen to the northern German freight intersection.
Local public transport connections are possible via bus and railway.
The landing strip in southern Stade can be used for company purposes.
The E.On transformer in Dollern stations provides electricty, the BEB supplies gas via natural gas lines laid in close proximity to the property, and the Barge waterworks provides drinking water.
Even though BMW has selected a different location, the area is still available for any other large businesses which might want to have a location in Stade.
