The city is located directly on the border to the district of Kaliningrad on the north-eastern border of Poland and the Russian Federation. The administrative district encompasses an area of 362 km2 and has over 20,000 inhabitants. Goldap has been recognized as a health resort since 1999 because of its special environment, clean air, clean water in the surrounding lakes, and its proximity to the lush forests on the Szeskie hills and the Romincka primeval forest.

The area is very well suited to tourism at any time of the year.

A regular youth exchange is held. Of particular note are a career group exchange as well as an exchange between the school orchestra of the Vincent Lübeck Gymnasium and the district youth music school of Stade with the state music school of Goldap.
