Givat Shmuel is an urban settlement located near Tel-Aviv. It was founded in 1942 by a group of emigrants from Romania under the directorship of Schmuel Pineies, one of the most significant activists of the Zionist movement in Romania.
Givat Shmuel covers over 3,600 Dunam (360 hectares), of which one third is developed and two thirds comprise agricultural areas. Approximately 3,500 families and 14,000 inhabitants live in the district. The population is heterogeneous and reflects the diversity of the social, economic, and municipal classes to be found in Israel. Compared to the average age of the inhabitants of the state, the population of Givat Shmuel is young.
There are few jobs in the district, and the majority of the inhabitants earn their living by working at various jobs in other places. 64 % of the inhabitants complete their school programme successfully and receive the official matriculation certificate. 30 % of the inhabitants are university students or graduates; Givat Shmuel has the second best educated young population in the state.
In Givat Shmuel there is a university which is considered one of the best in the country, and, in certain faculties, one of the best in the world. There are also ten synagogues, a culture centre, twenty-four kindergartens, and two modern schools. There are also two youth clubs, in which around 1,500 young people participate in sports and workgroups as well as social youth movements. In addition, there is also a music school and a netball school.
